Gentlemen,
Welcome to another season of Wilted Tulips Rugby! I hope you’ve all started to recover from the Christmas-New Year period and more importantly from those injuries picked up last season. This is especially so for some of the boys who played in the World Golden Oldies Festival in October where some pretty willing matches resulted in the odd muscle tear and broken bone (but nothing too serous!).
Once again the club will be attempting to field three grades and a Colts team. Once again it will be a struggle but there is plenty of confidence about the place and a re-invigorated committee lead by fellow Wilted Tulip Rob ‘Rabbit’ Taylor as the newly-elected President. We all know the enthusiasm Rabbs brings to the place so with a little bit of support I’m sure we’re all in for a big year at Eridge Park.
It won’t just be a big year for Bowral but a big year in rugby generally with the newly expanded Super Rugby tournament and the World Cup later in the year. To this end the Club hopes to be a bit of a hub and as part of that will be showing Super Rugby matches at the clubhouse on Friday nights. As part of this initiative people can become members of the ‘100 Club’ which will involve member draws etc. Of course you can still just pop on down to the club for a beer and rugby even if you aren’t a member of the ‘100 Club’.
Ok, that’s the general news, now for the specific Wilted Tulips news. Firstly, we again have received invites to a number of Gala Days. I know most of us prefer proper games as part of a full grade day but these are the things most often on offer so we need to consider the Gala Day circuit as well if we want to get more games. Have a look at the following and let me get an idea of your interest for any or all of these:
• 9 April – Vincentia Van Gones 10th Anniversary Gala Day
• 17 April – Camden Weathered Rams Gala Day
• 28 August – Penrith Legless Emus Gala Day
A couple of people have already started enquiring about games and I will be sending out for expressions of interest as well. As many of you know, there’s a lot of mucking around with all of this and there’s a lot of promises and half promises made that go nowhere but that’s just the way it has to be with all of this in the hope that you get all the games you can. Which brings me to admin. Many of you already know but some may not, that my lovely wife Jo and I are expecting our first babies (yes, that’s babies – twins!) in the April/May period. We can expect this to be a pretty full-on time for the both of us. Now whilst I do not intend to give up my role with the Wilted Tulips - and I will be on extended leave from work so this may provide a good distraction – I might need an off-sider to assist with all of this when the little ‘uns arrive so if you are interested in giving me a bit of a hand let me know.
Again we’ll need to sort out some sort of sponsorship for the insurance. Coco of CCK Concreting and Stu Westhoff at the Highroad Financial Consulting did a great job for us last year and you both get first bite at the cherry if you’d like to get on board again. But the more sponsors the better – it will allow us to get a bit more merch or do a few more things socially. We also have to think about fund-raising for the next World Golden Oldies Festival in Fukuoka Japan in 2012! On that Rabbs has told me that they are re-designing the website and we’ll have our own page. This will allow us to give our sponsors a more dedicated space for exposure and will allow us to have photos, match reports etc. So amongst other things of interest if you could send me any photos you might have taken involving the Wilted Tulips over the last couple of years that would be great and be a real draw-card to the webpage.
Finally, a few important dates to remember in the short term:
• 5th March - Waratah Steel Cup (Eridge Park) - Bowral versus St Ives (CONDAMINE FLOOD APPEAL DAY)
• 12th March - Fountain Cup (Grenfell) - Bowral versus Grenfell and Albury Wodonga
• IDRU COMPETITION
• ROUND ONE (2nd April): Bowral versus University (Eridge Park)
• ROUND TWO (9th April): Bowral versus Vikings (Eridge Park)
• ROUND THREE (16th April) Bowral versus Wollondilly/Bundanoon
• ROUND FOUR (23rd April) Bowral versus Camden (Camden Rugby Park)
As you can see from the list the first weekend – this weekend – is particularly significant as the Club is raising funds for the Condamine Rugby Club who suffered significant damage as a result of the Queensland floods so please get down there and lend your support not to our grade players but to a very worthy cause. <<100 Club.doc>>
